MARYVILLE, Tenn. — In the rematch of the top two teams in the USA South, the Piedmont College women's basketball team could not withstand a second quarter surge by the Scots in a 63-53 loss on the road Wednesday night. The Lady Lions scored just four points in the second quarter and trailed by 11 at the break, 33-22.
The Lady Lions trailed by five quickly in the contest and did not score from the floor until the 5:03 mark when Carly Sales hit a layup to make it 9-4 Maryville. Piedmont trailed by as many as eight in the following minutes but a Brianna Barrett 3-pointer brought the Lady Lions back to life.
Bridgette Kelly reeled off six straight points beginning with a 3-pointer in the final 1:29 of the first quarter and the Lady Lions took an 18-17 lead into the second quarter. Kelly hit another layup with 8:54 to go till the break making it a 20-19 lead for Piedmont, but the Scots surged with a 14-0 run and held Piedmont scoreless until only 19 seconds remained till halftime as Symone Ball sank a pair of free throws.
Trailing 33-22, Piedmont started hot in the second half as Mary Kate Rushton hit a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the third period and Piedmont went on a 7-2 run to open the second half. The Lady Lions were then held scoreless for over four minutes but were only outscored by four in the third period. In the fourth, the Lady Lions won the period 19-14 but it was too late as the Lady Lions fell by 10 to the Scots.
Piedmont hosts LaGrange College on Saturday, February 20 inside Cave Arena in the final contest of the regular season.
