Lt. Governor Casey Cagle Friday named Forsyth County Commissioner Brian Tam as his citizen appointment to Georgia’s Judicial Qualifications Commission. His term begins Sunday.
“Brian has distinguished himself as not only one of Forsyth County’s most successful small business owners, but also as a dedicated public servant committed to advancing the interests of his state,” Cagle said. “He will be a great asset for Georgia as we work to ensure our judicial system upholds the highest ethical and moral standards.”
Tam was first elected in 2004 to serve as the District 2 commissioner for the 2005-2008 term. He was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2012.
A resident of Forsyth County for more than 18 years and a local restaurateur with over 25 years experience in the service industry, he currently manages the restaurants Tam’s Backstage and Blue Grass Lakes Café.
Tam graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in management. He and his wife Kelly have three children and attend Browns Bridge Community Church.
ABOUT THE JUDICIAL QUALIFICATIONS COMMISSION
House Bill 808, enacted by the State Legislature in 2016, established a new JQC along with guidelines for its membership and governance. Georgia citizens overwhelmingly supported the passage of Amendment 3 to amend the state’s constitution in November.
Effective January 1, 2017, the commission will consist of two judges of any court selected by the Supreme Court, one member of the State Bar of Georgia appointed by the President of the Senate, one member of the State Bar of Georgia appointed by the Speaker of the House, two citizen members appointed by the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House along with one member of the State Bar of Georgia appointed by the Governor, who will serve as chairperson of JQC.
All members of JQC will be subject to Senate confirmation and are limited to serving no more than two consecutive terms.
