A woman who worked as a bookkeeper at North Jackson Elementary School in Talmo has now been charged with stealing almost $14,000 from the school .

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum confirmed Tina Thomas Cook of Jefferson was booked Monday on charges of felony theft and forgery. Mangum said the 50-year-old Cook posted a $24,000 bond the same day and was released from custody.

A report in the Athens Banner Herald said the sheriff's office got word about the alleged thefts on December 13 when school officials turned over evidence to investigators.

School officials said they found out Cook had been altering bank statements and not making full deposits of school monies since May, according to the newspaper.
