It's a common phone scam — the caller claims to be a representative of your local police or sheriff's department, and informs you that you've missed jury duty, and must pay a fine over the phone.
This time it's deputies in Gilmer County who are warning residents not to fall for the scammers.
According to a post on the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, residents have been reporting such phone calls.
Law enforcement officials said, in no uncertain terms, that they absolutely will not conduct business in such a way; anyone who receives such a call should hang up and report it to police.
The scammers have been known to spoof their caller ID, or even use the names of legitimate officers or deputies.
