The Georgia State Patrol has released details of a single-vehicle wreck on Ga. 197 south of Burton Dam Road that claimed the life of one person near Batesville Sunday.

"A Ford Escape was traveling northbound on Ga. 197 and was entering a curve to the left," said Cpl. Casey Coffee of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa. "The driver of vehicle 1 failed to negotiate the curve to the left and traveled off the east shoulder."

After traveling off the east shoulder, the vehicle struck a tree with its front then caught fire, according to Coffee. The vehicle sustained extensive fire damage and Coffee said he was unable to obtain registration or vehicle identification number information.

"The identity of the driver is pending confirmation by the Habersham County Coroner’s Office," Coffee said.

Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire said no further details are available pending identification and then notification of family.

The wreck shut down Ga. 197 until about 8 p.m.
