Posted 9:55AM on Wednesday 16th November 2016 ( 7 years ago )
The House Republican Conference elected 9th District Congressman Doug Collins to serve as its vice chair in the upcoming Congress.

The vote makes Collins, of Gainesville, the fifth ranking House Republican.  The Hill reported last week that Collins had faced Congressman Bill Flores of Texas for the post.

Collins called the vote humbling and said, "as the blue wall crumbled, it reminded everyone that support for conservative principles is deep and wide."

The Hill also reported last week that Collins made the decision to run for the post after Donald Trump's election victory.

"Together, we will show the American people that ours is the party of compassion, freedom, and fairness," Collins said for a news release.  "Now, Republicans have a mandate to make room for hope and opportunity for all Americans, and it's my honor to share in that responsibility."

Collins, who was first elected in 2012, has served on the judiciary and rules committees.
