The Georgia Department of Public Health commissioner announced the appointment Tuesday of a new District 2 Public Health Director.
Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald appointed Dr. Pamela Logan to the position. Logan will replace Dr. David Westfall who is retiring on December 31. District 2 covers 13 northeast Georgia counties.
Logan completed a preventive medicine residency at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her work included evaluation of flu rates among elderly minority residents of DeKalb County.
"She initiated educational programs in senior centers, after which the rates of vaccination increased throughout the county and treatment for influenza in the county decreased in this population," a news release from the state and district 2 public health stated.
Also at the CDC, Logan served as a medical epidemiologist and medical officer with the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service. Logan has investigated infectious disease outbreaks, including hepatitis A and Tuberculosis.
Logan's education includes a BS in biology from Spelman College, medical degree from Howard University and MPH in healthcare management and policy from Emory University. She also earned a masters degree in English from Georgia State University.
Logan is scheduled to begin work in the district Wednesday and will work with Westfall until his official retirement.
