BUFORD — This is the time of year when Buford football typically thrives, and the Wolves showed that they are very much in their element on Friday, mauling North Springs 45-7 in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs in Buford.
The Wolves (10-1) scored four first quarter touchdowns to stamp their authority on the contest, as Anthony Grant provided much of the damage. The running back notched Buford's opening scores on runs of 15 and 2 yards en route to an impressive night as he rushed 13 times for 174 yards and three scores. His longest run came on a 74-yard touchdown blast in the third quarter -- which also proved the final score of the contest.
Buford quarterback Mic Roof also tossed two touchdown passes, hitting Matthew Walton for a 22-yard score in the first quarter and Jake Simpson for a 28-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Roof finished 7 of 11 for 112 yards.
Derrian Brown also scored on a 9-yard touchdown, while Bernardo Burgos chipped in with a 33-yard second quarter field goal.
The Wolves toted up 231 yards rushing on the night -- thanks in large part to domination in starting field position. In the first half Buford started all of their drives inside North Springs territory.
Buford moves on to the second round, where they will play host to Jones County while looking to reach their 17th consecutive state quarterfinal.
