The Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department was named Agency of the Year by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association at its Annual Conference in Athens Wednesday night.  This is the 16th time over the last 25 years that Gainesville has won the award for its population category, 20,000 – 50,000 residents.

Parks and Recreation Board Chair Susan Daniell said in accepting the award “On behalf of our board and staff, we are extremely proud to receive this award. This is an honor, not only for the agency, but for the Gainesville community as well.”

The Rock Creek Veterans Group was honored as Volunteers of the Year for its "hard work and dedication" in erecting the war memorials which anchor the Rock Creek Greenway in downtown Gainesville.

Beth Morris, Gainesville Parks and Recreation Youth Athletics Manager, was named Distinguished Professional in the association's Athletics and Aquatic Network.  Morris was recognized for her 40- plus years of "dedicated service to the field of recreation."
