GAINESVILLE – The Gainesville City Board of Education Monday evening approved the creation of a committee charged with naming the new elementary school currently under construction in the Mundy Mill Subdivision. While the committee as an entity has been approved, members of that committee remain in flux.
A list of seven names was presented to the board by Superintendent Dr. Wanda Creel as a starting point from which a final list could be approved.
“Those were people, as we were thinking, just to come forward and have names,” Creel said of the list of community leaders familiar with the $17.4-million building project expected to be completed by the end of July.
“We certainly welcome your input in formalizing what that committee would really look like so that we can adjust those names,” Creel said to board members.
The opening list also included a non-specified representative from the Mundy Mill Homeowners Association. Board Chairwoman Dr. Delores Diaz liked that idea and suggested taking the strategy a step further.
“May I suggest that we seek out someone else other than Mundy Mill residents, perhaps from Copper Springs or Maple Forge; someone else in the school district,” Diaz offered.
Other names were offered by members of the board, but until those individuals can be contacted - or designated, as in the case of the three homeowners associations – and agree to serve on the committee, the list is not final.
But that detail won’t delay the onset of working towards the selection of a name for the school.
“We now have a formal committee that our board has asked to put in place and we look forward to working with them in the next couple of weeks,” Creel said following the work session.
They will have to work quickly, however, as Dr. Creel hopes to have a name for the new school by the end of the month. “We hope that our board will approve a name on November 28th.”
