A student from East Jackson Comprehensive High School (EJCHS) in Commerce is dead and a Barrow County man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death.
A deputy responded to the shooting on Rooks Road in Winder on Friday, November 4 just before 8:30 p.m., according to a Monday afternoon press release from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said the victim in the shooting was Jose Tovar-Campuzano, 18, of Athens. The alleged shooter was identified as Roberto Arellano, 45, of Winder.
Investigators said the evidence they gathered from witnesses at the scene indicated the victim had gone to the home to try to mediate a dispute between the son of the suspect and another person that had happened earlier in the day. The victim apparently was related to one of those involved in the dispute.
As the discussion escalated, Arellano came out of the house with a rifle and shot Tovar-Campuzano in the abdomen.
The press release and an accompanying police report said when deputies arrived on the scene, they found the suspect trying to help the victim after he shot him.
Tovar-Campuzano was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Arellano is in custody at the Barrow County Detention Center and has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.
