The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance in September in Georgia decreased 16.7 percent compared to August, while in metro Gainesville they were down 13 percent.
Applications decreased in eight of the state's 14 metropolitan areas, were unchanged in one and increased in five.
State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said most of the decrease came in several industries such as retail trade, accommodations and food services, manufacturing, health care and social assistance, professional and technical services and administrative and support services. Over the year, claims were down statewide by 10.3 percent from September 2015.
