The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has awarded the Gainesville Police Department a grant in the amount of almost $11,000 for new bulletproof vests. The city would need to absorb the other 50-percent of the cost of the vests, according to grant stipulations.
The Gainesville City Council will decide whether or not to accept the grant money at Tuesday evening's council meeting.
In order for the grant to be approved, the City of Gainesville is required to match the BJA’s $11,040 grant. The Gainesville Police Department told council members at a Thursday work session the money could come from their uniform budget.
“It’s a good deal,” Gainesville City Mayor Danny Dunagan said
The lifespan of a bulletproof vest is five years. With the help of this grant money, the police department will be able to purchase 27 new vests over the next two years.
