It's good to be back with another edition of The Last Time after a week's hiatus.
Hopefully you all enjoyed a stress-free weekend without a Georgia game to worry about, perhaps indulging yourself with the Alabama-Texas A&M game or the utter beatdowns handed out by LSU and Auburn. (Woah.)
But now it's back to football we care about it.
And it's Florida (hate) week.
Let's check some stats.
The last time...
1) These teams met:
In Faton Bauta's only start for Georgia, he had a far-less-than-stellar day, going 15-of-33 for 154 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions.
Florida won 27-3, their second straight victory in the series behind Treon Harris.
If not for Marhsall Morgan's lone field goal, the Bulldogs likely would have been shut out. (More on that in a second.)
2) Georgia won in the series:
It was my senior year at UGA, my fourth in the Redcoat Band.
The Bulldogs were looking for a third straight victory in Jacksonville, with running back Todd Gurley returning from an injury he sustained against LSU several weeks earlier.
Senior quarterback Aaron Murray and Gurley got the offense moving in the first half, building a 23-3 lead, only to hang on for a 23-20 win.
Gurley finished with 187 all-purpose yards, including a 73-yard touchdown reception.
It's never been the same since, has it?
3) Florida went undefeated in October:
A win for the Gators would put them at 3-0 in my favorite month of the year. (It has my birthday and lots of good college football in it, so I'm a bit biased.)
It would be their first undefeated October since a 12-0 season in 2009, Tim Tebow's final year on campus.
That year, Florida knocked off LSU, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Georgia to go 4-0.
Since then, they've lost at least once every October, including an 0-4 effort in 2011.
4) Georgia was shutout:
I'm not saying that I'm predicting a shutout, but a freshman quarterback playing behind a shoddy offensive line against one of the best defenses in the country doesn't figure to be pretty.
If the Bulldogs were to get goose egg'd at Everbank Field, it would be the first shutout since Alabama blanked them 31-0 in 1995.
Putting yourself in Ray Goff's company isn't a good look, coach.
BONUS: Georgia was shutout in Jacksonville:
This has happened six times in history, most recently in 1984, a 27-0 Gator win.
Fun fact. The teams have actually played to a scoreless tie, which happened in 1930.
DOUBLE BONUS: Georgia shutout Florida:
Other fun fact. Georgia has shutout the Gators 15 times throughout the series history, most recently in 1982, a 44-0 win.
Some notables from that list of Bulldog shutouts:
- Georgia shutout Florida in their first four meetings, and five of the first six.
- In 1942, the Bulldogs won 75-0, the largest margin of victory in the series.
- There hasn't been an October shutout since 1919, when Georgia won 16-0 in a game played in Tampa.
5) Florida lost to Georgia and Tennessee in the same season:
Good news for Bulldog fans: The last time the Vols beat the Gators, Georgia did too.
Back in 2004, Tennessee knocked off Florida 30-28, a match-up the Vols wouldn't win again until this year.
The Bulldogs exorcised some demons that year, too, ending a seven-year drought in Jacksonville with a 31-24 victory.
To put all this in perspective, a win for Georgia would mark only the second time since 1971 where Florida lost to both schools in the same season.
(It should be noted, however, that the Gators didn't start playing Tennessee every year until 1990, meeting only four times across the '70s and '80s.)
6) Georgia led Florida (in a game):
I put the second part of that stat as a qualifier, since we aren't talking about the series history here.
The last time the Bulldogs led was with 6:36 left in the second quarter in 2014.
Georgia pushed out a 7-0 lead, only to watch the Gators running game crank things into gear, tying it up at the 6:36 mark, then taking the lead for good a minute and a half later.
The Bulldogs never led in the 2015 game.
7) Florida led Georgia (in the series):
See? I had a plan for that all along.
And to answer this question: never.
The Bulldogs currently lead the series 50-42-2, even with the Gators winning 20 of the last 26 meetings.
8) A Georgia senior class graduated with a sub-.500 record against Florida:
Here's an interesting stat for you.
There hasn't been a senior class at Georgia since 2011 that failed to beat the Gators at least twice, notching their only win during their final meeting. The four most recent graduating classes went at least 2-for-4 in Jacksonville.
Here's how the record breaks down:
Class of... | Record |
2012 | 2-2 |
2013 | 3-1 |
2014 | 3-1 |
2015 | 2-2 |
The 2016 class is currently 1-2, with a chance to even the series on Saturday.
9) This game DIDN'T directly affect the SEC East race:
I'll qualify this statement by outlining what I mean by "directly affecting" the race.
It is a "direct affect" if:
- The winner of this game won the SEC East.
- The loser would have otherwise won the East had they won this game.
This has only happened once in the last five years — again we return to 2013, when eventual 8-4 Georgia knocked off eventual 4-8 Florida, both of whom fell well behind 11-1 Missouri.
Every other year since 2011, we've seen the game have the criteria listed above.
In 2011, 2012 and 2015, the East winner won this game — the Bulldogs taking the former two, and the Gators the final year.
In 2014, the loser (Georgia) would have otherwise won the East had it not fallen in Jacksonville, opening the path for Mizzou the repeat as champs, despite the Bulldogs thrashing the Tigers 34-0 in Columbia.
10) Kirby Smart lost to Florida:
Smart comes into this game holding a five-game winning streak over the Gators, dating back to his early years at Alabama.
His last loss was in the 2008 SEC Championship game, when Urban Meyer's Florida squad knocked off the Crimson Tide 31-20 en route to a national title.
Smart's teams never lost after that, beating the Gators in two more SEC Championships (2009, 2015) and three regular season games (2010-11, 2014).
If you're wondering, Smart is 9-6 against Florida all time, though five of his losses came as a player, graduate assistant and running backs coach at Georgia.

That's all we've got for this week. Enjoy the WORLD'S LARGEST OUTDOOR COCKTAIL PARTY (That is the name, and I'm sticking to it!) and have a safe Halloween on Monday.
