A Cleveland man was arrested overnight after allegedly driving onto a crowded sidewalk in Helen and striking two females before leaving the scene.

This incident happened just after midnight on South Main Street (Ga. 75) in Helen.

"A large group of people was walking southbound on the sidewalk between Huddle House and the Super 8 Motel when, according to a witness, a light-colored Ford F-250 pickup truck driving northbound drove onto the sidewalk, striking two females in the group," said Helen Police Chief Brian Stephens.

The female victims were taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Stephens announced an arrest in the case early Saturday morning, saying Nicholas Allen Ivester, 34, is charged in the case. He said exact charges and further details will be released as the case unfolds.

The investigation into the incident is active and ongoing, Stephens said.
