The Citizens Project Selection Committee for Gwinnett County's 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) has recommended allocation of funding for 10 categories of road improvement projects, should the penny sales tax get voter approval in November.
Members of the committee recommended two levels of funding (see chart at the bottom of this page), since the tax numbers are based on estimations. Tier 1 is based on the minimum estimation of the tax revenue, which comes out to $406,863,000. The Tier 2 projects are essentially the "if the money is available" projects, filling in the gap to the highest estimation of $455,497,500.
“We’ve followed this process with each SPLOST program beginning in 1997, and with the exception of the recession that affected 2009 SPLOST collections, we’ve consistently reached the minimum level identified by our financial staff,” said Charlotte Nash, chairwoman of the board of commissioners, in a news release.
The citizen committee is comprised of 11 representatives from various interest groups: a homeowner from each commission district, businesses, environmentalists, schools, civic organizations, freight, young professionals and seniors.
