The Hall County School District (HCSD) was among three school systems in Georgia honored Monday night with 2016 Healthy Georgia Awards.

The Hall County School District received the “All-Star School District Award" at the inaugural event, which was held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Jake Weiers, HCSD Wellness Facilitator, received the award on behalf of the district. Weiers expressed thanks to his wellness champions at each Hall County school, the Board of Education and Superintendent Will Schofield.

"We have come a long way over the past six years. This award is a reflection of our champions, a true district award. I am so proud to be associated with Hall County, and all the wonderful people that I work with,"Weiers said.

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, served as co-chairs for the event and made the award presentations.

"Thanks to the hard work and dedication of many individuals across our state, Georgia has made great strides in improving the lives of our next generation. Day in and day out, parents, teachers, business and community leaders and volunteers dedicate their lives to serving others….It is our honor to celebrate with you and recognize your contributions, which have changed lives of countless Georgia children," said Cagle.

The Healthy Georgia Awards were presented in three categories: Non-Profits, Business/Community, and School Districts. In addition, within each category, three awards - Innovation/All-Star/Legacy - were presented to recognize specific levels of achievement.

Innovation Award winners are revolutionaries and ground breakers who achieve impact through creative thought and outside-the-box action. Championing for health and wellness within their own communities, they aim to transform traditional methods, perspectives and approaches while celebrating diversity.

All-Star Award winners recognize the acclaimed organizations working at the forefront of Georgia's health and wellness movement. They are celebrated figures noted for their advocacy and extreme accomplishments within the public-realm. Revered leaders among the community at large, there are multiple partnerships within that measure the impact of programming.

The Legacy Award celebrates people of enduring impact whose robust efforts have helped to shape the landscape of health, nutrition and safety in Georgia. They are community role models, respected leaders and key stakeholders dedicated to cultivating a climate of continual growth and advancement within the arena of health and wellness through helping others and implementing best practices for others to flourish.

The other two school district award winners were Atlanta Public Schools, which was selected as the Innovation Award winner, and Carrollton City Schools, which was honored as the Legacy Award winner.
