SUGAR HILL — The Gainesville girls volleyball team finished third in the Region 8-AAAAAA tournament Saturday at Lanier High School.
The Lady Red Elephants dropped the first match to Habersham Central 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-22) in the winner's bracket and fell to Winder 2-1 (25-23, 11-25, 25-21) in an effort to have a re-match with Habersham Central for the region championship.
For the tournament, Sydney King had 54 digs, 5 assists, and 2 aces and Savannah Roys added 9 kills, 8 aces, 24 digs, and 3 blocks for to lead Gainesville. Abby Alexander contributed 15 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs, and 10 blocks, Tangi Miller had 12 kills and 8 digs, Cori Griffith added 11 kills, 5 digs, and 5 blocks, and Anna Wylie had 5 kills and 6 blocks for the Lady Red Elephants.
Camille Holcomb had 4 aces and 11 digs, Caroline Mercer had 12 digs, Isabella Appling had 4 aces and 16 digs, and Olivia Gettys had 18 kills, 7 digs, and 3 blocks for Gainesville.
Gainesville qualified for the Class AAAAAA state tournament as the No. 3 seed out of 8-AAAAAA and will travel to Brunswick to play Glynn Academy, the no. 2 seed from 2-AAAAAA in the first round next week.
