A house in Gainesville suffered heat and smoke damage after a fire in the building's kitchen Sunday afternoon.

Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith said in an email that crews were called to the home on Walker Street near Thompson Bridge Road at around 6:45 p.m. and found light smoke coming from the building.

Smith said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen, however the rest of the house did suffer heat and smoke damage. The kitchen itself took "heavy damage" Smith said.

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire, however crews did recover three cats from the building. Smith said the cats appear to be unharmed.
