CANTON, Ga. — A former city manager of Waleska has been arrested on theft charges following a four-week investigation into missing city funds.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jay Baker said Friday that 43-year-old Aimee Abernathy has been charged with two counts of felony theft of taking. Baker says Abernathy was arrested Thursday.

Baker says Abernathy is accused of making more than $14,000 in fraudulent payroll payments to herself for nearly five years she served as city manager in Cherokee County. She is also accused of using two of the city's credit card accounts to make $8,000 in personal purchases.

Abernathy resigned in late October.

Abernathy is being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center with a $60,818 bond. It's not clear whether Abernathy has an attorney.
