An injured Appalachian Trail hiker had to be rescued by emergency personnel in White County Thursday afternoon.
White County Fire Services, Helen Fire Department and White County Emergency Medical Services were dispatched around noon Thursday to the Appalachian Trail, in the Andrews Cove area north of Helen.
Due to the victim's location, it took some time for personnel to reach him.
Firefighters and EMS set up two teams, with Team 1 hiking a couple of miles on Andrews Cove Road and Team 2 hiking a couple of miles then using an ATV on Tray Mountain to Indian Graveyard Gap, Newberry said.
It took rescue personnel two hours to reach the injured hiker, Newberry said. He was treated and medical personnel then placed on the ATV and driven to the waiting ambulance for transport to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
The operation took a total of four hours, Newberry said. No other injuries were reported.
