Local gun shop responds to President's order to tighten gun control

Posted 6:16PM on Tuesday 5th January 2016 ( 9 years ago )
As the President made an emotional statement regarding gun control in his last year of office, pushing for more background checks and licensing for all dealers, among other things, others are speaking out in favor of the current regulations. GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan and Republican Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz have both spoken out in opposition of tighter regulations on law-abiding citizens.

Locally, Jason Bohannon, the General Manager at Gun Commanders in Cleveland, said he feels the current background check process is effective, if it's followed properly.

"I think for the most part, it's effective. When you get in to digging further deeper into people's private lives, that's when it becomes an issue. People have a lot of issues with how far do you allow them to look into your life before they make this decision," said Bohannon.

"But it's been fairly effective, as long as it's enforced properly. As long as the people who are doing their job in the stores know what they're supposed to be looking for, know how to avoid certain things, like straw purchases where someone is buying a gun for someone else, things like that."

Bohannon said he often gets calls from customer asking about things they've read on websites, though many of the sites aren't credible sources.

"People are concerned they're not going to be able to get this or that, or they're really just concerned about how it's going to limit their personal freedoms."

And, in light of the constant conversation about gun control and the push for tighter regulations, Bohannon said December had the highest gun sales their store has ever had since it opened two years ago.

"I couldn't even throw out a number for the amount of guns we sold in December," Bohannon said. "But I do know that in two years of business, this past December was our largest [sales] month in two years. I could say that also for the month prior, it continually got bigger and bigger."

Bohannon was featured on Tuesday's Afternoon News Wrap.
