DAHLONEGA — For the second consecutive year, the Battle of Blood Mountain trophy will call Dahlonega home following the formal presentation at halftime of the UNG men's soccer match on Tuesday (Sept. 22) evening. North Georgia won seven of the 11 possible points during the 2014-15 athletic season to retain the trophy after winning the inaugural competition in 2013-14.
In front of an overflow crowd of 534 fans clad in Nighthawk blue, UNG director of athletics Lindsay Reeves was presented the trophy by her counterpart from Young Harris, Randy Dunn.
As with the young tradition of the Battle of Blood Mountain, Dunn was required to don a royal blue North Georgia shirt before handing over the trophy for a second consecutive year.
The Battle of Blood Mountain Trophy originated in the summer of 2013 and is awarded annually to the school that is victorious in the most head to head meetings between the two schools. One point is awarded per sport in a Ryder Cup scoring format based on the number of competitions in a given sport.
Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and is the midpoint between the University of North Georgia and Young Harris College. Blood Mountain is the sixth highest mountain in Georgia with an elevation of 4,458 feet and is located on the border of Lumpkin and Union counties and is within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blood Mountain Wilderness area.
