Spin and win. That could easily sum up Denny Hamlin’s victory in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
On lap 2 of the 400 mile race, Hamlin made contact with A.J. Allmendinger, sending Hamlin spinning and eventually landing him a lap down.
Hamlin made up the lost time, and, on a restart with six laps to go, powered his way from third all the way to the lead. He went on to hold off teammate Carl Edwards to make the first strike in the Chase for the Sprint Cup by taking the win and locking himself into the next round of the Chase.
Hamlin talked about his win to the media afterwards. We also heard from Hamlin’s crew chief, Dave Rogers, along with second place finisher Carl Edwards and fourth place finisher Matt Kenseth.
On Saturday morning, John Hunter Nemechek stretched his fuel mileage further than anyone else, allowing the second generation racer to score his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at Chicagoland Speedway.
While others had to pit for fuel over the closing laps, Nemechek, the son of NASCAR veteran Joe Nemechek, saved as much petrol as he could, and crossed the finish line a little over 12 seconds ahead of Tyler Reddick.
The win makes Nemechek the fourth youngest series winner at 18 years, three months and eight days of age. Nemechek talked about the win afterwards. We also heard from Reddick and fourth place finisher Daniel Suarez.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series now heads for the “Magic Mile”, New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H. for the second round in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, while the NASCAR Xfinity Series will be at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, KY on Saturday night. WDUN will have live PRN Radio coverage of the full race weekend.
