CUMMING - One person died and another suffered serious injuries in a wrong way driver accident early Sunday morning on Georgia 400 in Forsyth County. Authorities said alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
The accident occurred just south of North Old Atlanta Road on Georgia 400, according to Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Robin Regan. He said authorities received word of the wrong way driver before the crash.
"Dispatch started receiving phone calls of a wrong way driver heading southbound on the northbound side of 400. Calls were coming in from as far north as exit 16," Regan said.
Authorities believe Maria Gonzales, 21, of Cumming was the wrong way driver. Her Honda Accord hit a Nissan Exterra in a head-on crash.
"Both vehicles were being driven by adult females in their 20's. One female (Gonzales) died on scene, the other female was entrapped in her vehicle. Firefighters were able to extricate her," Regan said.
Ashely Held, 27, also of Cumming, was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to Regan. He condition was listed as serious Sunday afternoon.
Regan said the case remains under investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigations Unit.
