HOSCHTON — The Buford girls softball team dropped a pair of games in heartbreaking fashion Friday in the Brookwood Invitational Tournament on at Mill Creek High School.
The Lady Wolves lost 3-2 to Ridgeland out of Region 7-AAAA. They dropped the nightcap, 6-5, to host Mill Creek.
Against Ridgeland, the Lady Wolves of Buford could not take advantage of a career pitching performance from Kennedy Kotula. The senior struck out 12 , scattered four hits, and allowed just one earned run.
Playing under tie-breaker rules in the seventh inning, Ridgeland scored two runs to go ahead 3-1. Buford fought back The Wolves pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh but came up short when Ridgeland’s centerfielder made a diving catch to rob Samantha Thomas of a game-tying RBI to end the game.
In Game 2 against Mill Creek, the Lady Wolves could not hold a 5-0 lead in the seventh. They had taken the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning on a pair of two-RBI doubles by Thomas and Kotula.
The Lady Hawks rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh against junior Chandler Wright, who allowed eight hits and struck out one in four innings of relief.
Buford (15-6, 5-1 Region 8-AAAA) will continue action in the Brookwood Invitational on Saturday taking on Columbus at 10 a.m. at Archer High School.
