PEACHTREE CITY - The National Weather Service (NWS) says another round of severe thunderstorms is possible across most of Georgia this afternoon and this evening, especially the northern part of the state.

Forecasters say wind gusts of 50 mph are possible, along with heavy rain and frequent lightning, and there may be more of the same Wednesday. The National Weather Service says the optimum time for the most hazardous weather is between 2 and 10 p.m.

Strong storms pounded much of north Georgia yesterday afternoon and evening, flooding some streets.  In addition, lightning from one of them may have been responsible for a fire that damaged Hayes Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Oakwood.  (See separate story. http://accesswdun.com/article/2015/8/330061/hall-co-firefighters-called-to-oakwood-based-chrysler-dealership .)

Rainfall at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville totaled three inches yesterday, bringing the monthly total to 5.09 inches, which is about an one-half inch more than the average for the whole month of August.

Street flooding in downtown Gainesville Monday afternoon at Jesse Jewell Parkway and West Academy Street. The National Weather Service says scenes like this could be repeated across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight.
