DAHLONEGA — The Nighthawk Nation will have another opportunity to celebrate the University of North Georgia softball team's 2015 National Championship on Tuesday, Sept. 1 as the UNG softball team takes part in the Golden City National Championship Trophy Tour.
UNG campus groups, local businesses and schools will have photo opportunities with the trophy beginning on Tuesday morning, with the tour making as many stops as needed before capping the day with a celebration at Dahlonega's Hancock Park at 4:00 p.m.
The traveling caravan will include the National Championship trophy, head coach Mike Davenport, Nigel the Nighthawk and members of the 2015 championship team. Groups will be able to take photos with the trophy, mascot, caoches and players, as well as hear a brief message from coach Davenport.
"This championship title belongs to all of us," Davenport told the crowd at nearly 1 a.m. following the team's return to Dahlonega on May 26. "It belongs to the players, the alumni, the university and the local community, and everyone who has supported us. We brought back the gold for you. I am so proud of this team."
The Nighthawk Nation is encouraged to post photos of their group with the trophy on all social media platforms with the hashtag #NighthawkTrophyTour15.
Following the Trophy Tour, the team will be recognized by both the City of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners at Hancock Park in downtown Dahlonega. Chris Dockery, LC Board of Commissioners Chairman, and Gary McCullough, Mayor of Dahlonega, will present the team with a proclamation honoring the team's historic run.
A meet-and-greet with the team and staff will immediately follow the presentation of the proclamation.
The busy day of celebration will end with UNG Athletics hosting Dahlonega Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours at Coleman Field House, home of the UNG softball team. The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is open to UNG faculty, staff, Nighthawks Athletic Club members and Chamber of Commerce members.
Sign up for a stop on the Nighthawk Softball National Championship Trophy Tour by filling out the online form. A member of the UNG athletic administrative staff will be contacting all registered groups to confirm the RSVP and schedule the approximate arrival time.
