WDUN’s Friday Game Night high school football coverage was honored this weekend with three first-place awards at the Georgia Association of Broadcasters 53rd annual GABBY Awards.
The awards were presented Saturday at the association’s annual convention at Jekyll Island.
“It’s nice to have your peers confirm what we’ve known all along and that is that we have excellent talent,” Bill Maine, director of radio operations, said. “In radio, you can have all the fancy equipment you want, but it’s your people that make the station.”
WDUN’s GABBY winner include:
Best Sportscast or Sports series for the Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show, hosted by Katie B. Davis and produced by Joe Kelly.
Best Play-by-Play Team, for play-by-play announcer Nolan Alexander, analyst Gene Anderson and producer Joe Kelly
Best Series for the Band of the Week feature by Travis Chaffin, which aired on Friday nights during the Burger King Tailgate Show and was also posted on AccessWDUN.com.
The play-by-play team of Judd Hickinbotham and Dan Kiley and producer Caleb Hutchins won an Award of Merit.
WDUN competes in the association’s AA classification against stations in similar-sized markets. WDUN AM550 and FM 102.9 are divisions of Jacobs Media, which also includes 1240 ESPN Radio and AccessWDUN.com, North Georgia’s most read website for local news.
Friday Game Night returns to the airwaves August 28 when the 2015 high school football seasons kicks off. Three different games will air each week – one on WDUN AM550, one of WDUN FM102.9 and the Gainesville High game on 1240 ESPN Radio.
The Georgia Association of Broadcasters, founded 80 years ago, represents the interests of Georgia’s over-the-air radio and television licensees who reach more than 95 percent of Georgia’s population every week. More than 500 entries were submitted to year’s GABBY Awards competition.
