ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings got a superb effort from young right-hander Jose Berrios and their bullpen to shut out the Gwinnett Braves by a 4-0 score Thursday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series at Frontier Field.

Gwinnett (48-50) finished the eight-game road trip to upstate New York at 3-5 including a split of the four games in Rochester that followed three losses in four games to the Syracuse Chiefs.

The Red Wings (53-46) wasted no time getting on the board. They plated an unearned run off Gwinnett right-handed starter Mike Foltynewicz (L, 1-6) in the bottom of the first.  With two outs and the bases empty, Oswaldo Arcia reached first on a ground ball misplayed by Jose Peraza.  Reynaldo Rodriguez made the G-Braves pay for the miscue, as he cracked a double into the gap in right-center field, which scored Arcia from first.

Rochester extended the lead in the bottom of the third when Eric Farris led off with an infield single, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single to left by James Beresford for a 2-0 advantage.

In bottom of the sixth, Rochester center fielder Danny Ortiz capped the scoring for the day with a two-run homer to right off of Foltynewicz to give the Red Wings their final four-run lead.

Foltynewicz pitched 6.0 innings gave up five hits and four runs (three earned).  He walked one and struck out six.  Right-handed reliever Vin Mazzaro went the final 2.0 innings and gave up three hits.

Berrios (W, 1-0) worked 7.0 innings with four hits, two walks and one strikeout, but Rochester used four pitchers to get through the eighth.

After the first two Gwinnett batters reached against Berrios in the eighth, left-hander Caleb Thielbar (H, 4) pitched 0.1 of an inning, righty Alex Meyer (H, 2) went 0.1 of an inning with one hit and lefty Aaron Thompson (H, 1) got the final out of the inning.  Right-handed reliever A.J. Achter completed the shutout with a three-up-three-down top of the ninth that included one strikeout.

The Red Wings held Gwinnett to five hits, but Peraza increased his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games with a 1-for-4 effort.

Rochester was led by Rodriguez, who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.  Beresford went 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.

The G-Braves will return to Coolray Field for a 7:05 p.m. game on Friday night vs. the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, to begin a six-game homestand.  Both teams have yet to announce their starters.  Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.

Former Atlanta Braves’ outfielder Ron Gant will be at Coolray Field, and the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Gant commemorative baseball card. Atlanta’s own Fur Circus will also make an appearance at the stadium that night, and fans will be treated to a spectacular “Fireworks Friday” show after the game.
