LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County firefighters were called to the scene of a gas leak this afternoon (Wednesday) on Collins Hill Road in Lawrenceville...at the construction site for one of the county's new fire stations.

According to Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge construction workers ruptured the 6-inch main, forcing the evacuation of approximately 30 people from the Georgia Gwinnett College sports complex located directly across the street.

"Firefighters are monitoring gas readings in the area and have a hose line on the ground to protect gas company workers," Rutledge said.

He said Collins Hill Road was closed as repairs took place, and that no injuries were reported.

Firefighters are currently on the scene of a natural gas leak outside in the 1061 block of Collins Hill Road in Lawrenceville.  A contracting crew struck a 6-inch gas main while digging to lay sewer lines at a construction site.  Firefighters are monitoring gas readings in the area and have a hose line on the ground to protect gas company workers.  Approximately 25-30 people were evacuated, as a precaution, from the Georgia Gwinnett College sports complex, located directly across the street.  Collins Hill Road is currently closed in both directions at Michael Drive.  Police are diverting traffic away from the incident.  The location is the Fire Station #31 construction site.  There are no further evacuations and no injuries reported.
