A Sunday morning fire at a Cleveland apartment complex resulted in five units being damaged.
The fire call was to 57 White Hall Commons Lane was dispatched at 10:56 a.m.
Cleveland Police evacuated the building prior to the arrival of the fire department. The fire, which was brought under control at 11:04 a.m., was located in the kitchen of one of the units.
Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt provided details.
"The occupant of one of the units was cooking and an apparent grease fire set off the sprinkler system," Pruitt said.
Water from the sprinkler system actually caused more damage than the fire, according to Pruitt.
"The worst thing about it the sprinkler system put the fire out, but till we got there and located the sprinkler shutoff the water was free flowing," Pruitt said.
One minor injury was reported.
"The gentleman where the fire originated suffered minor injury as he attempted to extinguish the blaze," Pruitt said.
The sprinkler system shutoff was not properly marked, according to Pruitt, and that caused a delay in getting the sprinklers cut off.
Pruitt said he will be talking with management about that problem.
