DAHLONEGA — Lt. Col. Rembert Gary "Gabe" Rollison, a 1966 graduate of the University of North Georgia (UNG), was posthumously inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame Wednesday in recognition of a 20-year career as a decorated military officer that included tours in Vietnam and Korea and service as an instructor.
Rollison commissioned into the U.S. Army upon graduation from UNG, and completed the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Airborne School and Ranger School that same year. After finishing Ranger School, he was assigned as an instructor at the Mountain Ranger course at Camp Frank D. Merrill near Dahlonega, Georgia, and, in January 1967, completed Jungle Warfare School in Panama.
Rollison served two tours of duty in Vietnam — with the 4th and 25th Infantry Divisions in 1967-68 and with the 101st Airborne Division in 1970-71. His awards include two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars, the Soldier's Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Medals, four Army Commendation Medals with "V" Device, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
In 1971, after returning from his second tour in Vietnam, Rollison was one of a few infantry officers selected to attend the Armor Career Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After completing the course, he taught military science at Kemper Military School and College in Boonville, Missouri, and in 1974 was again assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Rollison completed Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1978 and then served a one-year tour in Korea, followed by assignments to Fort Carson, Colorado, and Alaska. His last assignment was with Joint Task Force Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where he retired from active duty in 1987.
After retirement, Rollison held several positions in Alaska's oil industry and later served as emergency planner for the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska.
Born in Jesup, Georgia, Rollison grew up in Hinesville and graduated high school from Bradwell Institute. He was married to Martha White of Gainesville. He died of pancreatic cancer in October 2000.
The Ranger Hall of Fame was formed to honor the contributions of U.S. Army Rangers; nominees are selected from Ranger units and associations representing each era of Ranger history and are evaluated by the Ranger Hall of Fame Selection Board.
Each inductee is presented with an engraved, specially cast bronze Ranger Hall of Fame medallion suspended from a red, white and blue ribbon. The medal signifies selfless service, excellence and remarkable accomplishment in defense of the nation and the highest ideals of service.
The 2015 induction ceremony will be held at Fort Benning, Georgia, home of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command's Ranger Training Brigade.
