LULA - Officials in Lula are hoping to stress the fitness offerings available at the city's park on Athens Street.

At Monday night's Lula City Council work session, City Manager Dennis Bergin discussed the facility.

"We're brand identifying Rafe Banks Park as a wellness park, so we're promoting that if you'll go down there and take care of different activities - whether it be on the walking trails, tennis courts,  playground, basketball, baseball - that you're going to do yourself a favor and at the same time in a beautiful setting," Bergin said.

During the meeting, Bergin said city crews are constructing a new sign box to house the branding sign that is being built.

"You'll see the new sign that's going up for that, and as you go through the park there will be a new sign that identifies if you do so many laps of the walking trail you'll burn so many calories and all those type things, so we're real encouraged - beautiful setting down there!" Bergin said.

Additionally, Bergin said 130 feet of green vinyl fencing will be installed near the playground to keep children out of the creek.

Bids for the fence included a low bid of $1,569 and a high bid of $1,850. A bid of $1,215 didn't meet the gauge of wire specified by the city.

Approval of the bid for the fencing will be on the agenda at next Monday's city council meeting.

Bergin also discussed the aging concrete picnic tables at the park, telling the council, "If they're unstable I'm going to remove them."

Two concrete picnic tables have been removed from the park in the past two weeks due to instability, Bergin said.

"We're making upgrades with regards to the playground area putting in new fencing," Bergin said. "We're also putting in new picnic tables along the way. We've already put in some, and now the council has asked us to go forward and identify some others so we'll do that as well."

Bergin will gather prices for additional new picnic tables for the council to discuss Monday night. He said funds are available in this year's budget for the purchase.

Lula crews are building a box base to hold a new fitness park sign for Rafe Banks Park on Athens Street.
The City of Lula is looking at replacing failing concrete picnic tables in Rafe Banks Park with ones like newer ones currently in use.
