GAINESVILLE - Work on a tunnel under Browns Bridge Road west of Gainesville is impacting traffic and will take a new twist beginning Thursday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says E.R. Snell Contracting will shift traffic on Browns Bridge at Cresswind Thursday, if weather permits.

The tunnel, which has been in the planning stages for some time, will connect the part of the subdivision on the north side of Browns Bridge Road between McEver and Keith Bridge roads with a section of the development on the south side of the road.

GDOT spokeswoman Teri Pope says traffic will be shifted to the south side of Browns Bridge Road "to give room for a new bridge to be built that will allow Cresswind Parkway to be extended under SR 369/Browns Bridge Road. Georgia DOT approved the design through permit and is supervising the work because it affects State Route 369."  Pope added the work is "coordinated" with the future widening of Browns Bridge Road.

The traffic shift will occur between Keith Bridge Road and Montgomery Drive.

Wednesday morning, some workers were busy installing signs announcing a 35 miles-an-hour speed limit in the affected area.

Final preparations were being made Wednesday morning on Browns Bridge Road for a traffic shift Thursday to two new eastbound lanes between Keith Bridge Road and Montgomery Drive.
