GAINESVILLE - A dust fire was reported at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening at Pilgrim's Pride just off Bradford Street in Gainesville.
According to Division Chief Keith Smith with the Gainesville Fire Department, there were no injuries reported but there was significant damage to the facility.
Smith said by the time firefighters arrived, the explosion had, in large part, blown itself outself. The few remaining spot fires were quickly extinguished by crews on hand.
No word was given on the exact extent of the damage.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion occured in an area where corn is ground into chicken feed. The process is automated so no employees were present in that immediate area.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
