GAINESVILLE - This is Georgia Cities Week and the theme this year is Destination Downtown - and to that end, Main Street Gainesville is partnering with the Atlanta Botanical Garden-Gainesville to plant flowers on the square Wednesday, which is Earth Day.

"This is usually a Main Street project so we are thrilled to have the help and the flowers," City of Gainesville spokeswoman Catiel Felts said.

In addition, Felts said, Gainesville Tourism is conducting a day-long tour today of several local historic destinations with a group of 50 new residents from Cresswind, the 55+ subdivision west of Gainesville near Browns Bridge and McEver roads. One of the highlights is a jousting demonstration at the Northeastd Georgia History Center at 11:00. They will also be touring Alta Vista Cemetery, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, the Lake Lanier Rowing Center  and the historic Piedmont Hotel.
