DEMOREST - The Piedmont College Chorale and Orchestra “Great Composers Series” will present Carl Orff’s masterwork, “Carmina Burana,” at 7:30 p.m., April 14, in the Center for Worship and Music at the Demorest campus.

Directed by Dr. Lauren Ringwall, the concert will feature soloists Dr. Andrea Price, soprano; Dr. Johnathan Pilkington, tenor; Barton Gilleland, baritone; and the Seventh and Eighth Grade Advanced Girls Chorus of C.W. Davis Middle School, directed by Debbie Looney. Accompanists include Dr. Phillip Hayner and Joy Hayner on piano.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Piedmont students, faculty and staff are admitted free. The Center for Worship and Music is located at 992 Central Avenue, Demorest.

In 1803 during the renovation of a monastery near Benedictbeuren, Germany, workers discovered a 13th-century manuscript filled with more than 250 previously unknown verses written in German and Latin. The monastery's librarian collected and published them as the “Carmina Burana,” meaning "Songs of Beuren."

In 1937, a rising young composer named Carl Orff selected 24 of these verses representing a wide spectrum of human emotions from religious devotion to the cardinal sins and set them to music. The result was a composition for chorus and minimal orchestration that has been delighting audiences for more than 75 years.
