ALTO - Through a recent partnership with Mountain Education Charter (MEC) School, which operates at eleven sites in North Georgia, inmates at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto now have the chance to finish high school, by earning their high school diplomas.

State prison officials say this partnership, implemented at the prison in January (see earlier story linked below) has already seen much success in the first few months of its inception.

Currently, there are 45 inmates enrolled in the school:

Freshman - 21
Sophomore - 5
Juniors - 8
Seniors - 11

There has already been one "official" graduate. Ten students have less than 5.5 credits left to complete their courses, and 57 total credits have been earned.

Graduation is scheduled July 10.
