US stock indexes end a rough week with tiny gains

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. market indexes are ending a tough week with modest gains.

The slight increases on Friday weren't enough to keep the market from having its second-worst week this year.

The price of oil plunged 5 percent, ending a week of strong gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 34 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,712.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose four points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,061. The Nasdaq composite rose 27 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,891.

The Dow slumped 2.3 percent for the week. The S&P 500 lost 2.2 percent.

Oil dropped $2.56 to close at $48.87 a barrel.

Cruise operator Carnival jumped 6 percent after reporting income that beat analysts' forecasts.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.96 percent.
