GAINESVILLE - From an obscure gossip column to a dirt-moving machine, grass seed, a garden club grant and a brand new, historically appropriate lawn.

The Longstreet Society has been awarded a $1,000 grant by The Garden Club of Georgia Historic Landscape Grant Committee to replace the Piedmont Hotel's lawn with historically appropriate bluegrass.

An obscure article in an 1878 Atlanta newspaper, The Daily Constitution, reported that two years after opening the Piedmont Hotel, Gen. James Longstreet planned to replace the hotel's lawn with bluegrass.

Now, the grant has allowed the society to regrade and reseed the bumpy, patchy yard with bluegrass.

You can see the progress of our new lawn on the Society's webcam at www.longstreet.org.
