According to Hall County Schools spokesman Gordon Higgins, the system was already able to make up some of the missed days: "Some of the days...with the state declaring a state of weather-related emergency, there's some built-in options for school systems to exercise, and we did that with our 'School From Home' days, where teachers work with students with assignments, you know, over the internet, via email, and so we made up some days there."
The last day of school for students will now be May 27 and May 29 for teachers.
The schools' calendar on the system's website shows the original last day of school for students was May 22.
Higgins said the board approved the make-up days at their work session Monday.
NEW BUSES
Also approved at Monday's session was the purchase of 12 new school buses that the system will integrate into its existing fleet.
Higgins said the purchase is part of the system's continued effort to ensure their buses are up-to-date and in good condition.
"Each year we try to add to our fleet...as many new buses as we can with our budget," he said.
The 88-passenger transit vehicles are expected to be ready for use by the upcoming school year, which, according to Higgins, was one of the reasons the purchase was approved at this point in the year.
"Jewel Armour, our Executive Director of Transportation, said if the board would go ahead and do the approval, which they did, then the buses could be delivered by no later than July."
Higgins added the buses were purchased at a price that was pre-negotiated by the state.
