CUMMING - Charges have now been filed against a man who pointed a shotgun at Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies outside his home Thursday afternoon.

Kenneth Mercer faces four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer in connection with the incident of Swiss Air Road off Bethel Road on the north end of the county. Deputy Doug Rainwater said deputies responded to the house around 1:30 p.m. and found Mercer in the yard with the weapon.

"We surrounded the house, he refused to drop the shotgun, he continued to make gestures toward our deputies with a shotgun and we called in our SWAT team and a negotiation team," said Rainwater.

Rainwater said it appeared Mercer was trying to get officers to shoot him.

Eventually, deputies were able to get close enough to Mercer to tase him and take him into custody.

Mercer was transported to an area hospital and was then transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center, where he was charged in the incident. Bond has been set at $88,400.

Information released Friday by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said evidence obtained on scene confirmed that although Mercer had fired a weapon, he did not shoot at deputies.

Additional charges are possible, according to authorities.
