ATLANTA (AP) -- Forecasters are warning of the potential for 3-6 inches of snow across north Georgia including the Gainesville area.

The National Weather Service said early today that higher amounts would be possible in higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains. A winter storm warning remains in effect from late Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.

In metro Atlanta and elsewhere, many schools have already been closed ahead of the wintry weather mix that's expected to continue to batter a wide swath of the country Wednesday.

A low pressure system off the southeastern U.S. coastline was expected to bring a wintry mix of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain to portions of the eastern Carolinas on Wednesday evening before quickly moving offshore, according to the weather service.
It looks like there will be plenty of chances for a repeat of this scene in north Georgia later today and tomorrow. This snowman was constructed from some of the snow that fell in the Gainesville area yesterday.
