MURRAYVILLE - Hall County firefighters said they were hampered by a downed tree when they were called to the scene of a house fire on Kanady Road last Thursday night.

Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said they were alerted to the fire at 11:47 p.m. Thursday.

Once firefighters arrived at the home, they had to cut a tree away to get to the house, which was located about one-half mile off the roadway.

Cagle said the fire was well-advanced once fire crews got to the house; in addition, there was no hydrant near the structure. Also, propane tanks and exploding ammunition made the battle more difficult.

Cagle said the wife told authorities that she smelled smoke and when her husband went to the basement to investigate, he saw fire around the wood-burning stove.

Both occupants escaped the house without injury.

Cagle said the 8,000 square foot house was a total loss.
