Bitterly cold winds pushed wind chills below freezing at times across north Georgia Thursday afternoon and there's no let up in sight through at least mid-morning Friday.
Daytime highs across the region reached only into the mid-40s in a lot of places but strong winds keep wind chills 10-15 degrees colder. In Gainesville, for instance, the high was 47 but wind chills of around 30 were common at times as winds gusted to 43 miles-an-hour at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.
The prospect of continued windy conditions overnight coupled with lows in the 20s and below prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Wind Chill Advisory late Thursday afternoon for some mountain regions through the night.
