GAINESVILLE - The Georgia State Patrol has released preliminary details of a three-vehicle Hall County wreck that resulted in the death of a child Tuesday night.
Sgt. Anthony Coleman of GSP Post 6 in Gainesville said the wreck happened at 7:22 p.m. on Poplar Springs Road at Sloan Mill Road.
A 2010 Mazda 3i driven by 33-year-old Geovanna Juarez of Gainesville was traveling east on Sloan Mill Road approaching the intersection of Poplar Springs Road.
"It’s unclear if vehicle 1 stopped fully at the intersection," Coleman said via email. "Vehicle 1 entered the path of travel of vehicle 2'."
Vehicle 2, a 2013 Chevrolet van driven by 41-year-old James Cripps of Gainesville, was traveling south on Poplar Springs Road.
Cripps' van struck the left side of Juarez's Mazda car with its front. Impact caused the Mazda to rotate as it traveled off the east shoulder of Poplar Springs Road in an eastward direction, according to Coleman.
After impact, Cripps' van crossed the centerline into the northbound lane of Poplar Springs Road.
Vehicle 3, a 2005 Mazda 3i driven by 26-year-old Ashley Sosebee of Gainesville, was traveling north on Poplar Springs.
Sosebee stated she saw the initial collision between vehicle 1 and 2, and was stopping in the roadway in an attempt to avoid the collision, Coleman said.
Cripps' van struck the front of Sosebee's car with the front of the van once it crossed the centerline in an out-of-control movement, Coleman said.
In addition to Juarez, there were four juveniles in the first Mazda car. Coleman identified them as 5-, 8- and 16-year-old females taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The 5- and 8-year-old girls then were transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
A 6-year-old male in Juarez's car died of his injuries, Coleman said.
Cripps, who was driving the van, was transported by family to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton, Coleman said.
Sosebee was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Coleman said no additional information will be released until he has concluded his investigation.
