GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Government is encouraging residents to take to social media to show support for local law enforcement.
The county launched the "Back the Badge" campaign on Facebook and Twitter for citizens to show solidarity with their local police; participants are asked to post pictures holding signs saying they "back the badge" along with the hash tag "#BackTheBadge" in the post itself.
Users are also encouraged to tag the Hall County Government's Twitter account (@HallCountyGov) or the Hall County Sheriff's Office (@HallCountySO).
"We hope it creates a sense of pride in our local law enforcement. We're hoping that during this Christmas season that it shows the local law enforcement our appreciation," said Katie Crumley, Hall County Government Spokeswoman.
She added that in the wake of recent events in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland, fostering a connection between police and the public is vital to all parties involved.
"There is a wonderful community of officers here in Hall County, and there's a wonderful community of citizens as well," said Crumley.
Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in a press statement that he's looking "forward to seeing the positive energy this will generate within the department."
"The men and women who wear this badge day in and day out never do so for the purpose of recognition or praise, but because they feel called to serve and protect the citizens of Hall County. Nevertheless, this gesture will undoubtedly have more impact than words can possibly say," said Couch.
