Boys basketball: Big first quarter sparks Red Elephants to win

GAINESVILLE — Bailey Minor led four players in double figures to lead Gainesville to an 87-70 win over Clarke Central Friday in Region 8-AAAAA play.

Minor poured in 19 points and Tae Turner added 17 for the Red Elephants (5-0, 4-0 Region 8-AAAAA). KJ Buffen had 14 points and D'Marcus Simonds 12 for Gainesville.

The Red Elephants came out firing outscoring the Gladiators (4-6, 2-3) 28-6 in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. They led 51-26 at halftime and 66-48 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gainesville next will play host to Salem on Saturday in another key Region 8-AAAAA matchup.
