GAINESVILLE - Hall County 911 seamlessly switched over to its new, upgraded phone system Thursday morning without any drop in service to citizens, according to county officials.
"We are pleased to announce that the transition is complete and that Hall County 911's high quality level of service continued throughout the changeover," said Gail Lane, director of Hall County 911.
The upgraded phone network is one of the significant items being funded through Special Purpose Local Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII, which Hall County voters approved in March.
"This process took several months to implement, and its success is a direct result of the effective cooperation between Hall County staff and contractors," said Assistant County Administrator Marty Nix. "This is the type of hard work that the unsung heroes at the 911 Center do each and every day to keep this community safe and secure."
Lane said the older phone system that handled all 911 calls reached its end of life, according to the manufacturer, in April 2010.
"This type of system was no longer installed and the manufacturer could only promise their best effort as far as maintenance goes," she said. "Nevertheless, we have worked diligently over the past several years to locate discontinued parts to sustain the system and stretch its lifespan as far as possible."
Lane describes the phone system as the "heart" of the 911 network. She said it imperative that it remains in top condition as it stays in service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
"The new, upgraded phone system positions Hall County for the next step in the evolution of emergency call taking." said Lane.
The new phone system went online at 10:00.
